Oscar de la Renta and André Leon Talley’s Spanish Dress Exhibit

“[Oscar de] la Renta decided Balenciaga’s contribution is so important, that Nicolas Ghesquière’s helmet and leather tunic jacket, inspired by Spanish fishermen’s tunics, should be installed on its own in a special vitrine in the lobby, the first thing one sees upon entering,” André Leon Talley writes in his column in Vogue.

What could possibly get Mr. de le Renta this worked up and enthused? The exhibition he so ardently conceived and the exhibition Tally so avidly curates, of course. [Buy: Oscar De La Renta Gift Set]

Entitled Joaquín Sorolla and the Glory of Spanish Dress, the exhibit celebrates the vibrant history of Spanish clothing through the language of art; specially, through the classic paintings of the exceptional, Valencian artist Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863–1923).

For the first time, Sorolla’s vivid paintings of Spanish life are paired side by side with the types of costumes the depictions portray, ranging from rugged work wear to luxurious, festive dresses. Some of the costumes and artwork among the 10-odd paintings and some 30 examples of garments have never been exhibited in the United States up till now.

To demonstrate the impact of Spanish style on modern fashion, Joaquín Sorolla and the Glory of Spanish Dress also displays contemporary, Spanish-inspired pieces made by influential designers, including Cristóbal Balenciaga, Christian Lacroix, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Stefano Pilati for YSL, and Lee Alexander McQueen.

“What this exhibition aims to impart is the color, beauty, history, and joy of dressing,” says Talley. [Read: A.L.T. 365+ (André Leon Talley’s Monograph)]
