Acclaimed fashion designer Issey Miyake and celebrated fashion photographer Irving Penn are teaming up to bring you Irving Penn And Issey Miyake: Visual Dialogue, an exhibition that will showcase the synergistic, futuristic work of the two masters. The exhibit will run from Sept. 16, 2011 through April 8, 2012 at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in Tokyo.
In 1983, Penn was commissioned by Vogue to shoot Miyake’s duds for an editorial feature. Startled by Penn’s photographic skills, Miyake asked Penn to shoot his designs – and what began was an unusual alliance

“Visual dialogue” is indeed the best way to describe the relationship between Miyake and Penn. Over the course of their 13-year partnership, Miyake had never once attended the photo sessions – Penn was given complete artistic freedom to breathe even more life into Miyake’s stunning creations.

Marvelous as they are, the photographs have taken on a life of their own. Many have found their ways to appear in exhibitions, art books, and collectible posters. These photographic arts are a pure testament to the magical, off-handed collaboration between Miyake and Penn.
