Fashion is a tool and a form of self-expression. We can influence how we’re perceived and treated by others, and we can express our emotions and creativity through the clothes we wear. Dismiss fashion as trivial and we’ll miss out on using it to our best advantage.
Thanks to fashion trade organizations like the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), which recognizes and promotes fashion design talents, we’re offered a plethora of brilliant designs that help us stand out or blend in with all kinds of occasions imaginable.
To celebrate CFDA’s 50th anniversary, CFDA President Diane von Furstenberg has joined forces with the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (Museum at FIT) to present Impact: 50 Years of the CFDA, a fashion exhibition that highlights the most representative work of some of the organization’s most prominent members over the last 50 years. These members are distinguished fashion designers in the United States.
Among the designers included in the exhibition will be Bill Blass, Bob Mackie, Calvin Klein, Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Geoffrey Beene, Halston, Isabel Toledo, James Galanos, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Norman Norell, Oscar de la Renta, Pauline Trigère, Proenza Schouler, Ralph Lauren, Rodarte, Rudi Gernreich, and Tom Ford.

“American designers have always had [an] impact on how people dress,” commented von Furstenberg. “In honor of that creativity and in celebration of the CFDA’s 50th anniversary, we are proud to present, in partnership with The Museum at FIT, an exhibit that represents the tremendous work of our members for the last five decades.”
Von Furstenberg said of the exhibit title, “‘Impact’ was the one word that came to mind immediately – it is so strong and defining of our individual and collective influence that we knew right away that our exhibit would be called Impact: 50 Years of the CFDA.”

Arranged thematically from sportswear to evening wear, Impact: 50 Years of the CFDA will feature approximately 100 evocative garments and accessories. Each living, participating designer will select a single object that best represents his or her impact on the world of fashion. Meanwhile, exhibition curators Patricia Mears and Fred Dennis will be tasked to select statement pieces by notable, historical CFDA members.
In addition, Impact: 50 Years of the CFDA will include images and acknowledge the nearly 600 designers who have been members of the CFDA since the organization’s inception in 1962.
Can’t wait for the exhibition? A rich companion book of the same title is now available. Anchored by Mears’s enlightening essay on the history and evolution of the CFDA, the book contains more than 500 photographs, many of which have never been shown to the public before. The book is truly a celebration of who’s who in American fashion.
