“Following its successful debut in Shanghai last year, Fashion Visionaries – an exhibition dedicated to Hong Kong‘s 50-year fashion history – has returned home to Hong Kong bigger and better!” You read in an email alert.
Hong Kong? The city is undisputedly a leading international financial center in the world, but fashion? You aren’t getting your hopes up high, but you’re determined to check it out. After all, you’re a devoted fashionarian.
As you enter the 5,000 square-feet Fashion Visionaries exhibition housed at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum (HKHM), you’re immediately captivated by the avant-garde pieces showcased in the first exhibit space. You continue to stroll through the hallway and slowly take in the marvelous collection of formal evening gowns and creations by both emerging and established designers in the likes of Ika, Barney Cheung, and Pacino Wan.

Simultaneously, you are sinking into the visually stunning ambience. Several creations are exhibited in large, mirrored boxes like precious pieces of art. At another area, light bulbs are hanging down the ceiling like a giant chandelier. You are at awe, feeling guilty for doubting Hong Kong’s creative talents.
Sure, Fashion Visionaries is not Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty or The Fashion World of Jean-Paul Gaultier, but it’s undeniably far exceeded your expectations.

The guilt didn’t last, because your attention is quickly captured by the fascinating pieces put together by new grads and creativity-award winners. Intrigued, you dig up your smartphone from your Bottega Veneta purse and scan the barcode next to the talents’ name to learn more about the designers. [Shop: Bottega Veneta]
In addition to clothing and ensembles, Fashion Visionaries also features TV costumes; garments worn by notable Hong Kong pop icons, including Kelly Chen, Sammi Cheng, and Anita Mui; photos and magazine covers donated by such top models as Janet Ma and QiQi. Works from art and image directors, fashion illustrators, and fashion photographers are also presented in the multimedia exhibition.

Love fashion or want to explore Hong Kong’s fashion design industry and its distinctive achievements? Fashion Visionaries is for you.
An exhibition catalogue will be available for sale at Hong Kong Heritage Museum’s gift shop early January.
