“Fashion is dead,” said Catherine Lardeur, former editor-in-chief at Marie Claire (Crowd Magazine, 2010). “Designers [nowadays] have not created anything. They have only made clothes so people and the press would talk about them…”
“Azzedine [Alaïa] remains the king,” Lardeur continued. “He is smart enough [not to care] about having people talk about him… He only held fashion shows when he has something to show. Even when Prada owned him, he remained free and did what he wanted to do.” [Shop: Prada]
Refused to succumb to heavily commercialized fashion, Alaïa insists on making clothes on his own terms in his own time frame. Perhaps it’s this commendable stubbornness that’s given him a distinctive advantage. Devoid of distractions, Alaïa focuses only on creating garments so alluring and seductive, that they’ve earned him the reputation of the “King of Cling.” His provocative, clinging pieces have embraced the figures of such illustrious devotees as Tina Turner, Madonna, and Naomi Campbell.
From now through May 6, 2012, the Groninger Museum in Netherlands is hosting an exhibition entitled Azzedine Alaïa in the 21st Century, presenting the couturier’s exceptional creations of the past decade. Guided tours can be arranged during the exhibition period.
